Nailing the Couples Sessions
Spoiler - the couples sessions aren’t scary.
If you’re sat there saying “we’re not the most natural in front of the camera” then you’re exactly the same as 99% of my couples. I don’t expect couples to be fully fledged models, and I certainly don’t treat them like models either.
The couples sessions really are about capturing those natural moments of interaction between the pair of you, without any real heavy posing or awkwardness (other than me doing a bit of third wheeling at times).
I’ve listed out some really easy advice that will stand you on good stead to really enjoy your couples sessions, whilst getting those Bobby Dazzler shots too.
Stay close
When you get nervous about the couples stuff starting, the natural reaction is to freeze and look like you’re social distancing - which gives off a lovely ‘arranged marriage’ vibe. Not cool.
Throughout the day, do everything you can to stay close: hold hands, link arms, slap bums - it’s all good. It’s those moments of natural interaction I'll be looking for.
Your couples sessions don’t start once I’ve bundled you into a field - it’s all of those little moments before and after too.
So stay close throughout the day, and don’t just think “it’s couples time, lets make it look like we love each other.”
Drop the suckerfish
When the registrar gives you the nod, there is nothing better than going in for that big sloppy snog - but you don’t want your gallery full to the brim of you sucking each others faces off.
During the couples sessions, I’ll be pushing for you both to go back to your teenage roots and ‘tease the kiss’ a bit, as those moments of intimacy can look gorgeous.
So do feel free to have many a snog, but lets make sure your gallery doesn’t look like constant CPR between the pair of you.
Slow things down
Honestly, there really is no rush to get things done with - I’m sure the bar is keeping your guests throughly entertained.
Your couples session is likely to be the first few minutes you’ve had chance to let everything sink in and go “oh shit, we’re actually married!”.
It really is the perfect opportunity to slow the day right the way down, and enjoy having a moment between you both - it’s something that I promise you’ll smile about when reminiscing on your day.
Tipple
Time for me to be responsible and give you a ‘sensible supplier’ talk.
It’s your day, so it really is up to you on how much you have to drink - but there is nothing Photoshop can do if you’ve had a skin full by 5pm.
My recommendation is to try and make it to the first dance “in good spirits, but not slurring” - just so you can at least be standing if we opt for some evening shots (photographs, not alcohol) of you both.
After this, feel free to go full steam ahead on the Jägertrain!
Reeeeeelax
Easier said than done, right?
I’m certain some couples would rather have a root canal than a couples session, up until they’ve realised it’s not scary at all.
Just remember you’ve hired a natural reportage style photographer, so there’s not going to be any awkward posing - just a lot of fun and laughter between the pair of you.
If you can rock up to the couples sessions nice and relaxed, you’ll love the pictures - simple as that!
